Freedom of the City - Mr Richard Atkins

RESOLVED that, in pursuance of its powers under Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Council do confer on Mr Richard Atkins Freedom of the City Status in recognition of his outstanding services in the field of college education in Exeter and the wider area, which has led to Exeter’s name being known nationally as one which delivers an excellent college education to a very high standard.

 

[Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972 provides that the foregoing honour may be conferred by resolution of the Council passed by not less than two thirds of the Members voting thereon, at a meeting specially convened for the purpose.] 

 

 

Minutes:

Councillor Hannaford moved the recommendation that Mr Richard Atkins be awarded the honour of Freedom of the City in recognition of his drive and expertise as Principal of Exeter College. The College was highly regarded both locally and within the sector generally, having being judged by Ofsted as outstanding in January 2014, twice featured in The Sunday times 100 Best Places to Work in the UK and had won several Association of Colleges Beacon Awards for curriculum excellence.

 

The Deputy Leader, in seconding the recommendation, also referred to Mr Atkins’ reputation within the further education sector and to his role as President of the Association of Colleges.
